Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn at 1082 Nostrand Ave, Culpeppers is a cherished Caribbean restaurant that masterfully delivers the vibrant and soulful flavors of Bajan (Barbadian) cuisine. Since its establishment in 1998, Culpeppers has been a beloved culinary destination for those seeking authentic island tastes wrapped in warm, unpretentious hospitality.
Stepping inside Culpeppers, you’ll find a cozy, intimate setting reminiscent of a traditional Bajan bakery-meets-luncheonette. With a small footprint featuring just one table and three stools, the atmosphere is casual and inviting — perfect for a quick bite or a heartfelt meal that feels like a comforting homecoming. The electronic kiosk by the door streamlines ordering, offering convenience without compromising the personal touch their friendly staff is known for.
The menu reads like a love letter to Caribbean comfort food, packed with an array of richly spiced and satisfying dishes. Culpeppers’ Goat Roti presents the perfect balance of tender, slow-cooked goat enveloped in the iconic buss up shut paratha roti — flaky, soft, and delightfully fragrant without overwhelming heat. Their King Fish Cutter sandwiches boast tender fish paired with crisp Romaine lettuce and lightly sweet, doughy rolls that yield a pleasant textural contrast. For lovers of classics, the Macaroni Pie stands out as a simple yet deeply satisfying side, beloved for its creamy, cheesy custard baked to golden perfection.
Beyond the roti and sandwiches, Culpeppers shines with authentic dishes like Rice and Peas with Oxtail, Flying Fish with Rice N Peas, and the intriguing Cou Cou King Fish. Each bite conjures the essence of Barbados, from the tender oxtail that melts on your tongue to the subtle blend of spices that dance on the palate. Be sure not to miss their lesser-known treats such as Coconut Drops and the zesty Cucumber and Ginger Smoothie, which both refresh and surprise with their vibrant island flavors.
Customer testimonials truly bring Culpeppers to life. Regulars like Bradley Parris cherish the comforting nostalgia the food provides, calling it a “great reminder of back home” and recommending it heartily for Bajan cuisine lovers. Visitors echo this sentiment with praise for the “extremely friendly staff” and the sense of genuine connection that makes dining here so memorable. One first-time diner recounted how quick service paired with delicious, hearty portions left a lasting impression, while others highlight the staff’s warmth and attentiveness as a key part of the Culpeppers experience.
Whether you’re indulging in a hearty Oxtail Roti after a long day, savoring the distinct flavors of Stew Chicken Dinner, or simply enjoying a refreshing can of Coconut Water, Culpeppers invites you on an unforgettable journey to the Caribbean. Every dish tells a story—of tradition, love, and a vibrant culture lovingly kept alive in Brooklyn’s diverse culinary landscape.

#TGTG -This appeared on my app, so I couldn't tell if it was a restaurant or a bodega, however I digress. I got a healthy serving of rice, meat and fried dough balls, which were fantastic. While the rice were cooked properly, as a South Asian, i prefer basmati rice. Overall I felt satiated from the meal and the staff was courteous and gave me the order in no time :)
The staff was extremely friendly and the food was delicious. I was visiting NY from another country, and very quickly, the friendly staff engaged in conversation and provided top class service. Dinner one night, lunch the next day, and a takeaway of mauby and turnovers.
Had cou cou and kingfish. Family had snapper, macaroni pie and roti. Great reminder of back home. I would recommend this to anyone looking for Bajan cuisine.
I had the coucou and red herring yesterday and it was so delicious. Haven't had this delicacy in years. The staff is amazing and the prices are great, would highly recommend.
I come here for Souse Saturday. Be sure to shake up the container to disperse the spicy cucumber marinade. Recommended: drink some Prosecco or carbonated water to counteract the richness of the dish.
